Maternity is a time of transformation—both beautiful and overwhelming. As an expectant mother, you’re not just growing a baby; you’re embracing change in every possible way. And while maternity photos are meant to capture this incredible journey, the experience itself should feel just as special as the images you take away from it.
Ok imagine this, you are 34 weeks pregnant—your belly beautifully round, but exhaustion setting in quickly. You need frequent restroom breaks, yet there is this unspoken pressure to book an outdoor maternity session at a scenic location, wear a long, flowy dress that looks stunning on social media, and push through discomfort just to capture "the perfect shot." But did you actually enjoy it?
This maternity session was the opposite—simple, intimate, and deeply meaningful.
Choosing Comfort Over Trends
This beautiful mama originally envisioned an outdoor maternity session, picturing golden-hour light, sweeping landscapes, and the dreamy aesthetic we often see online. But as the months passed, reality set in. By the end of her first trimester, she realized she wanted something different—something unique, relaxed, and most importantly, enjoyable. She chose an in-home lifestyle session, a decision that truly honored both her body and mind.
At first, she hesitated. Like so many of us, she lived in a rental apartment—modest, cozy, and in transition as they prepared to move into a larger space. She worried there wouldn’t be enough room, that the simplicity of the setting wouldn’t be “enough” for a maternity session. But I reassured her—the magic isn’t in the backdrop. It’s in the love, the connection, and the quiet anticipation of meeting their baby for the first time.
Looking at these photos, you’d never guess we had just 5 feet of space to move around at any given moment!!

Keeping It Simple Without Losing Your Style
Keeping things simple doesn’t mean you can’t stay true to your unique style. In fact, as part of our session prep, we go over the aesthetics of your home, select the rooms that will serve as the backdrop, and discuss your personal style to determine the best outfits. Your maternity session should reflect you—and that doesn’t mean you need a $500 dress to look and feel beautiful. Whether it’s a cozy sweater, a flowy dress that already lives in your closet, or even just a soft robe that makes you feel at ease, the goal is for you to feel comfortable and confident.
Embracing the Mood of the Moment
The day of the session arrived, bringing with it a soft, steady rain. Instead of being a setback, it became part of the story. The moody, dim lighting perfectly complemented the intimate, cozy atmosphere she envisioned. Her husband, on the other hand, leaned towards lighter tones, so we blended both styles effortlessly to capture their unique love and energy.Blending both their styles, we created something truly personal—a reflection of them, their love, and their journey into parenthood.
The Beauty in Simplicity
Looking back at these images, I can’t help but smile. They are a testament to the fact that maternity photography is not about extravagant locations or trending outfits—it’s about emotion, connection, and celebrating the beauty of this fleeting season of life.
To any expectant mother considering a maternity session, my advice is this: Choose what feels right for you. Whether it’s an outdoor adventure or a quiet morning at home, your session should reflect your journey in a way that feels authentic and joyful.
Because at the end of the day, the most beautiful moments are often the simplest ones.💛
